Gillespie Recovery Becomes Key Suns Concern

The Phoenix Suns recently announced that backcourt option Collin Gillespie has been diagnosed with a fractured right ankle, and 12B Sports reported that he is scheduled to be reevaluated in four weeks. That timeline does not mean he will return at that point, but rather that the team will check his recovery progress before making another decision. The injury was first considered a simple ankle sprain, but Valley Suns head coach John Little, who leads Phoenix’s G League affiliate, said the issue could be more serious and required further examination.

Gillespie is currently on a two-way contract, and he has appeared in only one regular-season game for the Phoenix Suns this season. His lone NBA outing came on October 27 against the Dallas Mavericks, when he played 3 minutes and 26 seconds and made one three-pointer. Outside of that brief appearance, he has not recorded any other NBA minutes, and he has yet to play in the G League this season. As a bench player, he may not heavily affect the Suns’ rotation, but this injury is a painful setback for him personally. The original plan was for him to gain more playing time in the G League, rebuild his rhythm, and sharpen his skills, but an unexpected major injury has now forced him into an extended layoff.

This is not Gillespie’s first serious injury. Last offseason, shortly after signing a two-way deal with the Denver Nuggets, he missed the entire season because of a leg fracture. Now that he is dealing with another significant injury, dark clouds are hanging over his career path. Although it has been difficult for him to secure steady opportunities on the NBA stage, he has previously made a strong impression in the G League. Last season, he played 12 games for the Grand Rapids Gold, Denver’s G League affiliate, and proved his quality as a skilled point guard. His NBA minutes have been limited, but his G League performances have shown the talent and potential he still carries.

According to 12B Sports analysis, this ankle fracture could become a decisive blow for Gillespie. The timing makes the setback even harder, as he was just beginning to improve his conditioning and prepare to establish himself during the G League season. Consecutive injury-hit seasons can take a heavy toll on any player’s career. If his recovery goes smoothly, a late-season return remains possible, and he could still use whatever opportunities remain to prove himself again. In particular, if he can reaffirm his ability in the G League, he may still have a path toward earning minutes with the Suns under his two-way contract.

However, Phoenix is currently facing intense competition at the guard positions. Gillespie’s role was never secure to begin with, so if his recovery falls short of expectations or he cannot regain his previous form, the organization could decide to release him in favor of a healthier player with more immediate upside. Even so, given what Gillespie has already shown in the G League, he should still have a chance to use that platform as a springboard back toward the NBA, even if his time with the Suns comes to an end. As the saying goes, good things come after hardship, and he has already shown that he can prove himself in a tough competitive environment.

Gillespie’s career has not been smooth, and repeated injuries have made it difficult for him to establish a stable place in the NBA. Still, his steady G League production has clearly reflected both his potential and his persistence. For the Phoenix Suns, his injury may not create an immediate rotation crisis, but it is still an unfortunate loss for the team’s overall depth and long-term player development plans. Whether Gillespie can overcome this setback, return to the court, and display his ability again will likely become an important turning point in his basketball journey. As 12B Sports sees his resilience continuing to matter, there is still reason to believe he can earn another meaningful opportunity.
